Early 20th century handwoven, hand dyed mud cloth textile from the Bogolan region of Mali, West Africa. The design is hand painted using fermented clay as a resist and therefore each piece is the unique expression of the individual artist. The cloth would make an excellent shawl or throw or could be sewn in to pillows or clothing. Old mud cloth textiles are very rare and hard to find; the vast majority of pieces for sale are new.

The textile is handwoven in 5 1/2" (14cm) wide strips which are hand sewn together to form one large cloth. The design is quite minimalist and modern, and is reminiscent of interiors by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in the late 1800's.

This piece is in elegant shades of tan and natural light cream colored cotton. The textile is 40" (102cm) wide x about 65" (165cm) long with a raw edge. There are no holes, stains or repairs that I can see and only the slightest amount of fading. The textile is in excellent vintage condition given its age and origin; it is a stunning one-of-a-kind textile. It is woven from raw, unprocessed cotton of medium to light weight and the cotton has a lovely feel.

I recommend hand washing separately with cold water and mild soap. This piece has already been washed and ironed and can be used immediately. I have more vintage African textiles so please see my store for other designs. Combined shipping available on all textiles. Please ask any questions prior to purchase. Thank you!

All items are 100% authentic and vintage items will have been previously worn, often in a traditional environment. Every effort has been made to describe any significant flaws in both words and pictures in the listings however a certain amount of wear should always be expected. Handmade items should also be expected to contain irregularities which I believe adds to their character and does not detract in any way from their quality.
