WW1 Imperial German Dog Tag 1.6564
This is an M1887 type Imperial German Dog Tag German soldiers still had this type at the beginning of WWI. It is essentially the M1868 dog tag or "erkennungsmarke." The early ones were rectangles, later ones oval. It is made from zinc coated sheet metal. The motivation to issue soldiers with some form of semi permanent id, came after the battle of Koniggratz (1866) when so many died in hospital without their tunics with them and therefore without their pay books which identified them. Prussia was the first to issue them as far as I know. Before this it was a private purchase item.
