This chest is made of multiple domestic hardwoods. I believe I have identified Mahogany, Cherry, Oak and Maple. It measures 18" x 12" x 8" and weighs an impressive 14 1/2 pounds. It was originally made as a silverware storage chest by skilled wood-craftsmen in the 1940's or 1950's. The solid brass hinges and hardware are all original. This is one of the most beautiful and well built cases I have ever seen. This chest is made out of 1/2 and 3/4 inch solid American Hardwoods. The brass plate on the front is suitable for engraving.

The beautiful hand-crafted interior will safely accommodate 44 pens and is finished with beautiful Navy Blue faux suede. The medallion is an authentic semi-precious stone Mosaic Jasper. They just do not make chests of this quality any more.
The exterior was hand finished with a process I perfected to highlight the amazing wood grain and boasts no fewer that 15 coats of hand rubbed polyurethane. The Provincial stain highlights the exceptional wood grains of this piece.

Most of the cases that are made today are imported and comprised of plywood, particle board, laminates and cheap filler. They are sprayed with one coat of a "paint - stain" mixture that covers the natural grain and are hung to dry or may actually have grain printed or manufactured on the surface. Their assembly line interiors are made with plastics and flocking that afford little protection to valuable pens.
Many of the boxes I restore were originally made up to one hundred years ago. Most of the nicks, scratches and gouges (if there were any to begin with) have been completely repaired, but some will have small signs of wear and tear that was best not to attempt repair. This just adds to the beauty and individuality of each piece. The chests I refurbish had decades old factory finishes that cover most of the grain. I remove this opaque coloring and then sand the wood down to the natural grain. I use stains that enhance the beautiful grain instead of covering it. I am very particular about my work and I take a lot pride in the craftsmanship. These chests usually come to me in a “well used” condition and can take several weeks to complete the metamorphosis from plain to beautiful. When you compare furniture made today with furniture made 100, 80 or even just 40 years ago you will find a noticeable difference in the quality of materials. For example the bottoms that used to be made of solid hardwood are now made of particle board, solid brass has been replaced with brass plating and the wood keeps getting thinner and thinner. It is because of these differences that I prefer to start with cases that were made between 1900 and the 1970’s.

About Us
I have a fairly large collection of fountain pens and needed a way to store, protect and display them. I looked at the products that were available and found that in most cases they were cheaply built and/or very expensive. I could not make myself buy a solid wood case that would only hold ten or twelve pens for $75 or more. Most of my pens are vintage or antique so I looked for a way to make a storage vessel that was in the age group of my collection. I found I could refurbish silverware storage chests and jewelry boxes that would fit more than 20, 30, 50 and sometimes over one hundred pens at a fraction of the cost of some of the nicer commercial products. Every case is refurbished by hand and incorporates a custom built storage system that I invented.
