For Sale: Stunning examples of the classic Tangent RS4 loudspeakers - Matched Pair (A&B)
These classic British high-end speakers use the legendary KEF T27 tweeter and KEF B200 (SP1014) drivers in finely tuned bass reflect cabinets.
Built in January 1979 these superb speakers have had one owner from new and have been completely restored in January 2017.
Restoration Details
- All drivers removed and tested
- Cabinets deep cleaned
- Crossovers re-built with up to date factory spec components
- Internal re-wire with "woven" cables
- All joints soldered and cables secured
- Drivers sealed into the cabinets with high quality "speaker tape" gaskets
- Tweeter screws replaced with brushed steel threaded bolts
- Baffle boards repainted in matt black
- Brand new musically transparent grill cloth
- Tested electrically and musically
Note: There is one small chip on one of the corners and some residual glue marks on the rear of the cabinets (from original manufacture) - See photos. The RS4's usually use the Audax bass unit and I researched this before I restored this pair. As far as I can tell there were a number of RS4's made with the KEF B200 bass/mid driver but I am unable to find any details on the exact dates of manufacture. The baffle is original and is rebated exactly to accept the KEF unit and has not been modified since its manufacture. The serial number stickers are still in place and the terminal boards had certainly never been removed from the cabinets until I restored them. My conclusion is that they are the original drivers and cabinets for this version of the RS4.
Sound
The Tangent RS4's will take you to another level musically and will thrill you every time you use them.
The first thing that hits you when you first play them is their "complete sound". If you have ever listened to your own speakers and felt that there is something missing, well these Tangents will immediately show you what you've been missing.
Bass is very full and powerful yet remains incredibly tuneful. Many modern speakers will give you lots of bass (even when it shouldn't be there!) but these Tangents deliver a strong and powerful bass when it should be there. They never dominate or confuse the bass tones, they simply represent it very accurately. Listening to "An Englishman in New York" by Sting, the bass is so realistic and accurate yet remains isolated from all the other instruments.
Treble is sweet and accurate and mids are represented with focus and plenty of emotional engagement. The newly re-built crossovers integrate the drivers perfectly and the stereo imaging is extremely accurate and three dimensional.
Listening to live performances is absolutely phenomenal, close your eyes and quite simply, you are there.
Positioning
Ideally the RS4's benefit from being clear of the room corners and about 20cm from the floor. I used my test stands which are 22cm from the floor and it really enables them to breath. Space across the soundstage is incredible and all instruments/voices are separated beautifully.

quality loudspeakers have been an obsession of mine since a very early age. I
built my first speaker at the age of 10, it was rubbish, but it signified the
start of a lifelong pursuit.
Some 40
years on I am still fascinated by the influence that good quality speakers have
on the listening experience and I have experimented with many designs
(including my own) over the years.
Forming
my own company, Gener8 Sound in 2006 I kept dabbling in HiFi work as an
extended hobby. In early 2016 I gave in to my passion and am now restoring loudspeakers

vintage speakers and love restoring them to their original factory
specifications. This includes the drivers, the cabinets and the crossover

original sound and specifications with the goal of making each speaker one of

with vintage speakers they do suffer from wear and tear including knocks, chips
and scrapes and sometimes it is not possible to repair every single one
perfectly, but rest assured, I will never offer a set of speakers for sale
until I am completely happy with their look and performance.
