Black Ethiopian Welo Opal

New with tag. This is a stunning ring in size 6. The stone is a genuine opal from Ethiopia, and the setting is sterling silver, stamped 925.

Ethiopian opals have a higher water content than Australian opals.  This helps to give them the clear-to-color affect that is so fascinating in Ethiopian opals.  Looked at straight on, the stone may appear a solid black color, but turn the stone in the light, and the play of color begins.

The opal in this ring is a dark black, and it dances with flashes of reds and hints of greens.   The oval cabochon cut stone is 5X7mm, 0.80ct.  The sterling silver band style setting is decorated with swirls of sterling silver. The band measures 3/8ths of an inch wide (between 1/2 and 1/4 inch), and this pretty ring weighs 4.4 grams.

Most of the photos in this listing were taken using a regular desk lamp as the light source, which helped to bring out the opal's beautiful colors.

Please note that opals can be sensitive to soaps, chemicals, and hot water.

The genuine sterling silver used in this piece of jewelry is nickel-free.  In addition, the sterling silver is platinum plated to help reduce tarnishing, and to ensure an even shine.  Re-sizing is not recommended, and can damage the platinum plating.

Subjecting precious metals, pearls or gemstones to harsh chemicals and high temperatures can be damaging.
