I love this! Manchester company of pressed glass manufacturers. This dog paperweight was one of their most popular - some experts say it was because it was linked to the famous dog in the painting by Sir Edwin Landseer. The original registered piece dates to 3rd July 1874 but manufactured pieces may be slightly later.
It's in good condition for its age - the usual slight roughness on edges and visible mould lines in places typical of pressed glass. See two pictures where my finger indicates a small chip at two points on the base but really not visible when on a surface.
They were produced in different sizes - this is the largest - measuring approximately 7" / 18cm long base edge by 4.25" / 11cm width of base, 5.5" / 14cm high.
Some people think they are jelly moulds as they have a hollow inside but that is not the case. They were made as paperweights in the days when people had desks with lots of paperwork on!
