McNiece went on to make a total of four wartime combat jumps, the first as part of the Invasion of Normandy in 1944. In the same year he jumped as part of Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands, which was featured in the book (and subsequent film), A Bridge Too Far, and at the Siege of Bastogne, part of the larger Battle of the Bulge. His last jump was in 1945, near Prüm in Germany. He was discharged from the military in February 1946“He was in the 101st Airborne Division unit that seized the Carentan bridge portrayed in the movie “Saving Private Ryan.” The survivors of the unit went on to jump into Holland for Operation Market Garden. Afterwards, McNiece and the remaining Filthy 13 volunteered for pathfinder service. Having lost 80 percent of the pathfinders on each mission, these men had essentially volunteered for suicide duty. McNiece made one more combat jump and became one of only a few men to have survived four parachute jumps into combat.”
