“UNTITLED” (ABSTRACT) by ORIS ROBERTSON

Up for purchase is an original work of art by Texas Artist Oris Robertson. This is an original acrylic on board that is hand signed and dated, 1969, in the paint by the artist in the lower right-hand corner. The image is abstract - to me it looks like a pitcher on a table with some carafes, but who knows. The colors are a mix of beautiful greens and blues and blue-greens, with some grey and yellow. This rare and valuable little painting from Robertson's early years in Houston, before he moved to Mexico and started painting flowers comes framed in a darling vintage golden wood frame that is about 3" wide. There is a tan mat framing the painting. It measures approximately 23" x 19” framed; 17" x 13” matted; and has a 14" x 10” image size.

Oris Trigue Robertson was born in 1937 in Presidio, Texas, across the border from Chihuahua, Mexico. Robertson’s family moved to Brownsville when he was 8 and it was there that he started drawing and painting. At age 19 he came to Houston and worked several years at Houston's Alley Theatre before doing a stint in the U.S. Army. Longtime friend, Houston actress Bettye Fitzpatrick, whom Oris met in 1957 when they both worked at the Alley, recalls that Robertson "was outstanding, a very fine actor". Upon finishing his military service in 1963, he dedicated himself to art. A prolific visual artist, Oris studied commercial art at Texas Southmost College (now UTB-TSC), earning a degree in fine arts in 1968. Seven years later he moved to Guadalajara but would spend a couple of months each year at Fitzpatrick's home, where he had a studio. "He would go to the flower markets on Fannin Street and come back with three absolutely perfect lilies, put them in a glass and work on a painting," she said. "Then he might say, `I need a tulip.' And off he would go for a tulip." Robertson was known for his realistic, highly detailed paintings of flowers and vegetables. Frequently, Robertson would add an element of surprise to his paintings, such as a parrot sitting on a piece of watermelon or a cat peeking out from behind an intricately drawn drape.

Robertson spent most of his adult life working as an artist in Mexico, finding true inspiration in the colors, flowers and churches there. He was fortunate to be able to make a living off of selling his art, enabling him to travel to Brownsville to teach free classes for the local Art League which he did often throughout his life. In 2002, Nancy Thompson, an old friend of Robertson’s, helped establish the Oris Robertson Scholarship Endowment at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College. The endowment was established to provide funds to local students and professors who desire an opportunity to follow in Robertson’s footsteps, studying, painting and finding inspiration in Mexico as he himself once did. Oris Robertson succumbed to cancer at his home in Guadalajara, Mexico on October 27, 2002 at the age of 64. Some of his works are in the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art's permanent collection. Others have been displayed at galleries in Houston, Mexico and New York.

This painting is a one-of-a-kind, collectible, vintage work of art that is almost 50 years old. Consequently, it does show minor signs of handling and aging. The frame definitely has some nicks and scratches, and the mat has noticeable water damage as well, but I have inspected the painting itself very closely and I can find no flaws or damage to it. See photos for details. Determining an asking price for the art works we sell is not always easy as sometimes there isn't a similar work by the same artist to use as a gauge for the value of the piece being listed.
