This is a fabulous one of a kind old and used Kavat Snake Mask from
Baining people of New Britain. This dramatic bark cloth Kavat mask is
created by Central Baining peoples of New Britain, part of the New
Guinea Islands and are used in the night dances, a nocturnal performance
lit by firelight. The Central Baining practice both day day and night
dance rites. The day dance, accompanied by an orchestra of women, which
is devoted to female fertility, agriculture, and the mourning of the
dead, a phenomena typically associated with the community. The night
dance, by contrast, is accompanied by a male orchestra and dedicated to
spirits, animals, and commodities associated with the surrounding
forest, which are represented by the Kavat masks. Several dozen forms of
Kavat masks exist, each of which depicts a spirit linked with a
specific animal, plant, product, or activity associated with the forest.
This mask is made with Bush materials. The Mask itself is Bark cloth
with Bamboo and Reeds for the framework and tree Sap and Berries for the
dyes. This Banning Fire Dance Mask is Museum quality and a real
collectors item. This mask has personality and style and would wonderful
addition to your home.
