This is an exquisite leaf from a fine small Koran (123x142 mm.) that was in the Qajar period (mid 19th century), scribed in black elegant naskhi with fifteen lines of script on each page. The Qajars were a Turkmen tribe that held ancestral lands in present-day Azerbaijan, which then was part of Iran. Many authorities consider the Gulf States to have produced work second to none, especially the illuminated introductory and end pages of the holy books. Sura headings are in red on a gold or blue and gold grounds and verse endings are marked with gold medallions; gold floral decorations encircle each page. Some additional notations mark the 5th and 10th verses. The leaves from this fragment have been in great demand. Condition of these leaves is fine. The verso scribed in black elegant naskhi with fifteen lines of script on each page.
