This auction is for a vintage hand carved cribbage board with the head of a seal at the broad end, eyes are inlaid with black material, some type of local resource available at the time; has a hole drilled under his chin which originally held the pegs, but they are no longer with the crib board, may have also have had some type of plug. The sculpture is not signed or marked to identify the artisan; the seal is roughly 1" tall at the nose, cribbage board is roughly 1.5" wide at the widest point/the seal's shoulder area, coming to a point at the  end; overall length is about 11", weighs 174 grams.  Has a scrimshaw border around the cribbage board area with drilled holes for counting with the pegs; the center area of the "board" has a native symbol and an image of an Arctic Fox (?); there is an image of a fish near the pointed end, with a "Y" symbol from the fish to the point.  Overall very good condition with a forgivable flaw; has an old break about 5" from the tail with an old repair; visible but not too distracting to overall charm; has some partial scrimshaw detailing on the underside that almost appears unfinished, perhaps the piece was broken by the artist and he decided not to more time with it? Has some lengthwise age darkened hair lines on the "belly", as is commonly found with these older items. Getting harder to find these, don't miss out on this one of a kind piece! See our current listings for a wide variety of other vintage to antique items--we are always happy to combine shipping!
