  "Thomas Moore"
attributed to Sir John Watson Gordon (Scottish 1788-1864)
extensively inscribed verso
oil on canvas, framed

canvas measurements: 27cm by 20cm
plus frame: 38cm by 31cm

Very fine quality first half 19th century portrait painting. The work is attributed to the leading 19th century Scottish portrait painter, Sir John Watson Gordon, RA, PRSA 1788-1864.

Depicting a fine looking portrait of this gentleman, identified verso as the Irish poet Thomas Moore (1779-1852); painted half length and very much a fashionable gentleman of his period. The painting has extensive details inscribed verso, some of which admittedly are very hard to read due to the handwriting but some details can be discerned. The writing states, '...bought at the John Murray sale Selkirk 1924. The purchaser was an unknown....resident...sold to James Scott, antique dealer, Edinburgh March 1968. Bought by me AW Edgar from Mr. Scott 28th March 1968. John Murray was a tweed manufacturer and a collector. He was possibly a descendant of John Murray...and Sir John Murray KCVO....who had a large collection of Thomas Moore letters.... 9th December 1969. This picture was cleaned by Mr. H. Wadfield OBE.....research National Gallery of Scotland, Edinbugh, who confirmed that it was certainly by Sir John Watson Gordon and was a very good.....He stated that he had not put it on a new stretcher as he preferred to leave the original canvas and the original stretcher. He returned the original label to me in the enclosed envelope for retention".

We acquired the painting from Edinburgh, where it has presumably been since the above ownership.

Thomas Moore requires no introduction and is regarded as one of Irelands leading poets of his time;
often considered Ireland's National Bard and is to Ireland what Robert Burns is to Scotland.

Condition report:
The painting is
in very presentable condition for its age. The paint has begun to flake on the sitters forehead with slight flecks of loss to that area. Fine craquelure throughout and slight thinning of the paint to the lower section. Frame more modern with some scuffs.
