An extraordinary antique Victorian hand-crafted enormous silver plated insect brooch. I have never seen anything quite like this before - it really is a handsome beast of a piece! It is rather naively made and all the more charming because of this. The insect appears to have wings, so it could be a Cicada or other flying bug. It has some nice detail on the abdomen on the underside. Unfortunately there is a little bit of corrosion on the head, with a small hole, which I didn't even notice at first (please see last two pictures for comparison). This is hard to spot because it is behind the head and doesn't in any way detract from its immense charm. The brooch has an antique tube hinge, and simple C catch on the reverse. It isn't stamped anywhere.
