CITRINE by Elena Andia :
The name “citrine” was derived from “citron”, a French word meaning “lemon”, although its color tends to be more golden rather than lemon-yellow.
Citrine is the transparent, pale yellow to golden or brownish orange variety of quartz (SiO2).
Citrine is colored by trace amounts of iron (Fe3+) impurities.
Natural citrines are rare. Most commercial citrine is heat-treated amethyst or smoky quartz.
Natural citrine is weakly dichroic, meaning it shows two different colors or hues when viewed from different directions. These two colors from dichroism in natural citrine are yellow and light yellow. In contrast, heat-treated citrines do not display dichroism.
Amethyst usually presents color zoning. Its most characteristic inclusions are parallel liquid or two-phase inclusions that, depending on the incident light, produce alternating white and dark
bands, exhibiting the "zebra stripe” pattern, which is typical of amethyst. Some crystals might contain two-phase inclusions in veil-like pattern, negative crystals, partially healing fractures, hematite needles, Brazilian law twinning, etc.
Citrine is usually “eye clean” and it generally has few or no inclusions. The typical inclusions that can appear in citrine are the following: crystal inclusions, negative crystals, liquid inclusions, two-phase inclusions, partially-healed fractures, color zoning, etc.
Most commercial gem-quality citrine comes from Brazil; mostly in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais and Bahia. A classic exhausted locality for natural Citrine is Olkhovka in the Northern Ural Mountains, Russia. Other locations where natural citrine is found are Madagascar (Antananarivo province), Russia, Myanmar, Spain (Salamanca), France (Dauphine), etc.
