When I pointed to him his palms slipped slightly, leaving greasy sweat streaks on the wall, and he hooked his thumbs in his belt. A strange spasm shook him, as if he heard fingernails scrape slate, but as I gazed at him in wonder the tension slowly drained from his face. His lips parted into a timid smile, and our neighbor’s image blurred with my sudden tears.

“Hey, Boo,” I said.

Here we offer the rare, true first retail trade edition of Harper Lee's classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, published by J.B.Lippincott Company, Philadelphia in 1960. This is the extremely rare stated "second impression," meaning second print, (NOT a book club edition,) the first form, with notable brown boards and green spine cloth.  The book comes in a very-hard-to-find facsimile dust jacket of the 1st/2nd, ("Second Printing" as stated on the facsimile jacket,) which features a rear cover photo of the author, credited to Truman Capote.  The book also comes with a valuable custom professionally hand-crafted archival clamshell case with embossed exterior boards in the cover design of Mockingbird and a special ph-neutral soft interior lining.

This book is in excellent condition with virtually unmarked boards (please see pics.) This is NOT an ex-library edition, as so many of these were shipped directly to libraries and retail copies without library markings and wear are quite scarce.  Intact endpapers are inscribed; very tight and square binding, very clean, bright, and crisp text; no foxing. The facsimile dust cover is professionally produced with acid-free paper and archival inks. It is excellent and secure in its acid-free mylar jacket and new archival case and ready to slip into your collection. 296 pages. The book measures approx. 8 x 5.5-inches.

This icon of southern American literature will make a classic centerpiece to your firsts collection, a savvy investment, or a very thoughtful and generous gift for a very special person.
