TOURMALINE :
Tourmaline is the most colorful of all gemstones. Tourmaline is not a single mineral, but a group of several closely related minerals. The three most well-known members are Elbaite, Schorl, and Dravite. Other lesser known members include Uvite, Liddicoatite and Buergerite.
Schorl is a sodium iron aluminium Tourmaline species. It is the black member mineral of the Tourmaline group. The mineral Dravite is the sodium magnesium aluminium member of the Tourmaline group, which is usually brown.
The mineral Elbaite is the sodium lithium aluminium member of the Tourmaline group which is responsible for almost all the gem varieties. Elbaite is allochromatic, meaning trace amounts of impurities can tint crystals, and it can be strongly pleochroic, meaning it shows different hues when viewed from different directions. The main gem varieties of tourmaline are achroite (colorless), rubellite (pink to red color), indicolite (blue color), siberite (violet color), watermelon (green on the outside and red on the inside), verdelite (green color) and paraiba (neon blue to neon green color).
Tourmalines are found almost all over the world. There are major deposits in Brazil (Minas Gerais), Sri Lanka and South and South-West Africa. Other finds have been made in Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Tourmalines are also found in the USA, mainly in California and Maine.
Tourmaline can be found in fairly large transparent crystals, and these can produce very large exquisite and flawless gemstones. Pink and green Tourmalines from certain localities contain tiny, parallel inclusions, causing them to display a strong cat's eye effect when polished. Such stones are often cut as cabochons and called "Cats' Eye Tourmaline”.
