Spiny oyster is a strange looking sea oyster that lives in this hemisphere only in the Sea of Cortez between the eastern coast of Baja California and the northwest coast of Mexico. Spiny oyster are the porcupines of the sea oyster universe having calciferous protrusions of various lengths extending outward from their naturally ridged shells. These shells have an amazing color range from bright yellow through the orange and red spectrum to rich royal purple and about every shade in between.
The majority of oyster stones used in bracelets pendants, earrings, and rings have been polished like this stone to remove the ridges although Native American artisans often leave these shells in their natural state when they create traditional shell jewelry.
This year the brilliant colors of spiny oyster are everywhere in the fashion world -- splashes of color that mimic the brilliant fall colors that parts of this country experience. But the truth is that spiny oyster can be worn any season of the year -- you can brighten dull and drab winter clothes with a dash of color and, if you're partial to earth tones, virtually any color of spiny oyster nearly always fits in.
This ring features a light old pawn finish that mimics the appearance and patina of naturally aged sterling silver. The lovely and vibrant natural russet red egg shaped stone with white accents measures 1¼" by ¾," and it's mounted in a gorgeous custom made deeply impressed hand stamped sunshine, suns, and three dimensional repoussé clouds all overlaid on a shadowbox bezel measuring 1 and 5/8ths" by 1 and 1/8th." The artist added a sterling silver twisted rope overlay around the stone.
The ring also features a custom made sterling sun, sunshine, and corn plant overlay under the bezel on both shanks. When viewed from the side, the motif resembles an eagle with its wings spread. The shank itself is 3/16ths" in width so most jewelers could easily resize it for you within a narrow range of sizes due to the length and width of the shank. Re sized or altered rings can not be returned for any reason.
