TIBETAN “Thangka” or “Thanka” or “Tanka” is a painted or embroidered Buddhist banner which was hung in a family altar or monastery and sometimes carried by monks in ceremonial procession or by traveling monks – they were rolled up and easy to carry. They also served as teaching tools depicting the various aspects of the life of Buddha and his teachings. And also featured many lamas and other deities and bodhisattvas. One popular subject is The Wheel of Life. To Buddhists these Tibetan religious paintings offer a beautiful manifestation of the divine Buddha, of his life, historical events, of Lamas and  different aspects of life and death.

This unique and antique “Thangka”  was bought from a Buddhist monk and unfortunately was lost in storage.   It has numerous fine featured and detailed paintings of  incarnations of Buddha ,deities and lamas, animal, trees and flowers -  paying homage to The Buddha in the top half of the thangka. The colours are bright in some areas and in some places muted - the expressions of the figures are very expressive and beautiful but there are several tiny spots - as the thangka was forgotten rolled up. Also, some creases which should smooth out by hanging. It is quite an unusual and beautiful thangka.

Bordered in narrow gold silk and  royal blue Chinese silk brocade The back is bordered by traditional print red fabric.

Sorry, not the greatest photographs - the white shadows are from the flash. Can send better photos if required.
