Superb and rare Victorian English sterling silver athletics presentation rose bowl dated 1899. The bowl was presented to Francis William Gullick at the Brasenose College Sports Day, Oxford University,  in 1899 for winning the 100 Yards, 1/4 Mile and Weight. The latter is probably for weightlifting. (I know the full name of the trophy winner as it was purchased with two other trophies, one of which includes his full name, see other listings). The bowl has three separate engravings; the first is the monogram of the winner "FWG", the second is the Coat of Arms for Brasenose College and the third engraving reads "B.N.C. SPORTS 1899. 100 YARDS. 1/4 MILE. WEIGHT.". The trophy bowl comes complete with its original ebonised wooden plinth.

Silver Bowl: Weight: 235 gm. Height: 110 mm. Diameter of rim: 140 mm. Diameter of base: 80 mm. Hall Mark: Chester 1899. Maker's Mark: George Nathan & Ridley Hayes.

Plinth: Weight: 374 gm. Height: 50 mm. Diameter of rim: 70 mm. Diameter of base: 140 mm.

Summary: As can be seen from the photos this is a very attractive and collectable item. Solid sterling Victorian silver sports trophies from Oxford University of this quality are extremely rare. It is likely to be of particular interest to collectors with an affinity with Brasenose College, Oxford. Good luck!
