1943, GHOST BEYOND THE GATE by Mildred A. Wirt

#10 in beloved Penny Parker Mystery Stories series

Cupples & Leon Company, NY, 1943 Hardcover with lovely full color dustjacket. Blue plasticized hardback covers. Pictorial endpapers. 7 1/2 x 51/4 inches. 208 pages. Charming black and white illustration related to an action scene is on frontispiece. The dustjacket lists to #14 but the copyright page lists only to this #10 title. The back cover has Liberty War Bond advertising.

CONDITION: FINE/VERY GOOD+. The hardcovers are fresh and clean as new. The spine is very tight and the fore edges are like new. Book appears to not have been opened for reading.  The pages are free of odors, tears or bends. The dustjacket does have some minor edge wear and a 1-inch tear along spine bottom, but is otherwise bright and clean and not faded. Of course the paper itself is a bit “browned” because of the paper processing done during the WWII years. No writing or other marks on endpapers but there is a small sticker from the only book owner's bookstore in Butte, Montana.

This series was written by Mildred Augustine Wirt (Benson), who was one of many ghost writers hired to anonymously write the Nancy Drew Detective Series written under the Carolyn Keene pseudonym.  In addition to 20 some Nancy Drew books, Mildred Wirt authored other children's books in addition to her work as a ghost writer. This book is from a private collection compiled by a former book store owner in Montana. It has been carefully stored all these years.
