2016 is the year of the Big Wet. Bone dry until the very day we started and 6 months later it is still soaking wet out there. Never before has Cobar seen so much rain with 160mm falling on the opening days of this the 12th Cliffhanger. It certainly eliminated the dust, but also the rivers didnt just flow - they flooded and within 2 days the distinctive red outback turned green.

The wet changed the dynamics of all the stages. The steep rocky stages became very slippery as water cascaded down, speedway stages developed bog holes and half the field would fail to return from a navigation stage having become hopelessly bogged. Local boys Fing and Chicken from Cobar hit the mud so hard their trench can be seen from the moon.

Fortunately for you most of the guys run very powerful motors either screaming V8 or boosted and so the sound of these guys charging through mud is music to the ears and the rooster tails reached lofty heights.

Cliffhanger has become legendary among the off road racing scene for its exciting long stages and awesome up close viewing for spectators. Next year's Cliffhanger is on May 7th to 12th 2017 in central NSW. If you havent been to a Cliffhanger you really ought to round up a few mates and come and see the action. Spectators get convoyed out through fantastic rough terrain and get to watch all the action up close and back at camp they get pit lane access and camp along with all the professional teams. Many friendships are made and it's no wonder once they come, they come back.
