The way it works is take your cell phone and download an app (I like Piston). Once installed bring your phone and go to your car and find the OBD2/II or ELM327 plug (it's usually under the dashboard somewhere... Plug it in, turn the car on and let it idle and run while you 'pair' the device with your phone. Once paired you should be able to start the app and you will have to go from there. The app will give you codes and diagnostics and all sorts of information, it does take some getting used to, also it helps to find a code chart for your vehicle.
