INUIT ESKIMO
SOAPSTONE CARVING: UNIQUELY SHAPED BIRD BY LUCY MEEKO
Vintage soapstone
carving of a beautiful bird gliding across the water’s surface by LUCY MEEKO
(b. 1935) from the Great Whale River. Lucy is recognized as one of the early pioneers
of Inuit women sculptors. The graceful body
is accentuated by the gentle curve of the wing and lively expression in the
alert eyes. The unusual proportion of the head adds to the “naïve” folk art
quality and appeal of this delightful carving.
It is 4
inches long by 1.75 inches wide by 2 inches tall. It has a pleasing hefty feel
in the hand, weighing 10 ounces.
The artist’s
signature in Inuktitut syllabic is incised on the bottom along with the co-op carving
number 218207.
It is in
very good condition for such a vintage piece, with only slight wear (see
photos). What may appear to be cracks are mineral lines natural to the stone
and add character to the carving.
