About the publication history:

The periodical began in 1842 and was the first illustrated weekly newspaper. Utilizing full-page illustrations and ads, as well as poignant topical journalism, the magazine flourished as a weekly until the early 1970s, when it became a monthly. With the popularity of amateur photography before World War II, the quantity of color illustrations decreased and the magazine relied more on photographs to maintain a customer base. Gradually, publication saw brevity and, at its end in 2003, issues came only twice a year.
