Nike’s connection to tennis goes back quite a ways.  Many of John McEnroe’s trademark outbursts were delivered with his feet firmly planted in a pair of Nike shoes.  McEnroe’s involvement with Nike went beyond just another celebrity endorsement.  Thanks to his seal of approval, the shoe that would become the Air Trainer 1 went from a prototype on the verge of being scrapped to the shoe that pioneered the concept of cross-training.  Its popularity changed the idea of what a tennis silhouette could look like, and paved the way for future, legendary models like the Air Tech Challenge.

To celebrate the Air Trainer 1’s tennis legacy, the NikeLab and Fragment design team offers premium leather editions of the shoe that ushered in a new era of tennis design.  The shoes’ colorways reference the world’s Grand Slam tennis venues.  The clay courts of the Australian Open and French open are referenced by the rust colorways, the iconic center court and white attire of Wimbledon is present in the stately white/green models, and the US flag is the inspiration for the all white and all navy models, in honor of the hard court home of the US Open, Forest Hills, Queens.

The trainers have 2 extra laces in blue and red.
