Soapstone Carving
by Josie Oqaituq

Here is a handsome seal carving by Inuit artist Josie Oqaituq  of Belcher Islands (Sanikiluaq).   Has the wonderful delicate features of his works in the 1970s.  Carved in dark argillite stone, the seal is posed with its signature delicate head raised, and the hind flipper tucked in.   Lovely finish.

Josie has had a great interest in animals and over the years his favoured subjects for carving have included bears, seals and birds.

Signed very faintly in Inuktitut syllabics.

Measurements:   5 .5” x  2”H x 1.5”w
