1988 Coca-Cola OFFICIAL OLYMPIC INTERNATIONAL FLAG PIN SERIES 173 Set Seoul Coke

"The Olympic Games are a pilgrimage to the past and an act of faith in the future."

-- Pierre de Coubertin, Founder of the Olympic Movement

Background:

The Summer Olympic Games or the Games of the Olympiad, first held in 1896, are an international multi-sport event, occurring every four years, organized by the International Olympic Committee.  The 1988 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXIV Olympiad, were celebrated from 17 September to 2 October 1988 in Seoul, South Korea with 159 nations represented.  They were the second summer Olympic Games to be held in Asia and the first since the 1964 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan.  These were the last Olympic Games for two of the world's "dominating" sport powers, the Soviet Union and East Germany, as both ceased to exist before the next Olympic Games.  North Korea, still officially at war with South Korea, and its allies, Cuba, Madagascar, and Seychelles boycotted the games.  For differing reasons, Albania, Ethiopia, and Nicaragua, and did not participate in the Games.

The official mascot for the 1988 Summer Olympic Games was Hodori.  It was a stylized tiger designed by Kim Hyun as an amicable Amur tiger, portraying the friendly and hospitable traditions of the Korean people.  The name Hodori is a compound of ho, the Sino-Korean bound morpheme for "tiger", and dori, a diminutive for "boys".

Product Information:

The globe's most prestigious sporting event is commemorated with these limited edition collector pins.  Each of the 161 pins showcases a country's national flag design, the Olympic mascot Hodori, plus the co-sponsor's logo, that all-American refreshment - Coca-Cola.  Also, 1 additional pin displays the flag of the International Olympic Committee.  All countries which planned to attend the Summer Games at production time are included.  The actual countries participating differs slightly.

An identification plate displays the Coca-Cola logo and additional 11 pins with the Olympic Rings logo, the games mascot, and spells out "Seoul 1988" to complete the display.  Tremendous collecting appeal.  This Olympic set was released to coincide with the build-up promotion of the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul, South Korea.  Beautiful piece for any collector.
