In June 1940, after the Fall of France, the Germans found they had captured thousands of French and also British vehicles and a variety of armor pieces. Among their captures were over 300 French “Lorraine” artillery tractors and armored personnel carriers. Soon the Germans were utilizing these and many others to mount all kinds of anti-tank guns designed to provide much needed artillery support for their troops on the Eastern Front. More than 170 “Lorraines” were converted to carry the standard German 75mm anti-tank gun in an armored cupola. Although most of these converted "Marder 1" anti-tank guns saw service in Russia, a substantial number were supplied to the 21st Panzer Division and saw action in Normandy after the Allied invasion in June 1944.

*With this particular Marder 1 we have added (WHO18-B) two dismounted Panzer armoured crew figures... dressed in their Panzer black wrap-around short jackets... who appear to be relaxing outside their armoured vehicle.

HISTORICAL NOTE: The Marder 1 "Marten" (SdKfz 135) was a German World War II tank destroyer armed with the 75 mm anti-tank gun. Most Marder 1s were built on the base of the “Lorraine” chassis, a French artillery tractor/armoured personnel carrier. The Germans had acquired more than three hundred of these French vehicles after the Fall of France in 1940. From the early stages of Operation Barbarossa the Wehrmacht became aware that their ability to combat some of the Soviet tanks was inadequate. What was needed was a more powerful anti-tank gun that was mobile; the Germans possessed such a gun in the 75mm Pak 40 and they had experience in taking the chassis of an under-gunned tank or captured vehicle to provide mobility to a heavier gun. The Germans decided to use the captured French vehicles such as the Lorraine and less effective Wehrmacht tanks such as the Panzer II and 38(t) as the basis for makeshift tank destroyers. The result was the Marder series, comprising the Marder I, and other variants (Marder II and Marder III). These vehicles provided mobility to the German 75mm Pak 40, a high velocity anti-tank gun. Due to the weight and space constraints of the small chassis, the Marder series were not fully armored. Thin upper armor protection was provided only for the front and sides against shrapnel and small arms only and all of the variants in the Marder series had open tops. While the Marder 1 primarily saw service during Operation Barbarossa, it was also employed in France to counter the Allied invasion during the Battle of Normandy.
