Description:
This antique hand colored engraving is from The Animal Kingdom by Baron Georges Cuvier(1769-1832). This is from an English ed. published in London in 1834. The work was published in eight volumes. Four volumes of illustrations and four of text. There were almost 800 different plates, most of which were hand colored. Plate size is 5.5 x 8.5in. Plates are blank verso. Because of the type of pulp paper (high acid content) used at publication there will be age toning of the plates. Some more than others. Most image areas were protected by tissue guards. Most of the margin areas will have reaction toning because they were not protected by tissue guards. Some more than others. Some of the plates are somewhat brittle. Paper is cream colored. Some plates from this work will have foxing so please check the scan.
