POSTMODERN GLAZED POTTERY VASE MEMPHIS MILANO SOTTSASS STYLE BY FLORIO KERAMIA

Memphis has been a cultural movement born in Milan around Ettore Sottsass and Sottsass Associati, that has combined young architects, artists and designers in 1980s. Luciano Florio Paccagnella, an important member of the group was inspired by Yantra vases of Sottsass  when created his serial of unique, hand-made vases

“These pieces of pottery are born from a strong physical need: from the need for working, drawing and destroying beyond the limitations of the profession, or even beyond reality, itself. From the endless desire to walk on the mellow field of Utopia where there's no one around, where you are the only human you have to compare yourself to or to confront, the only human you can be completely frank with. Utopia is the only state where, from time to time, you manage to be absolutely serious and find the thread of really important things, recognize priorities and true purposes, discover the dimension of beauty and the fortunate experience of professional activities providing you with rich and satisfying opportunities  to learn and to understand, full of fun and happiness but incapable of extinguishing the eternal and tangential urge to roam, go out and go in every sense of the world, to search for private spaces, to design, draw, model and distribute new forms of pottery. This is the never stopping moment of wandering, an opportunity to meet with friends, to take out one's thoughts, plans, dreams, hopes and hopelessness from the drawer and hang them on the wall, strip them naked, explore and discuss them, to have a drink, listen to some music then go home. It's risky at the same time, just as risky as anything else one does without any logical reasoning, clear consideration, argument or reasonable explanation.”

Florio Paccagnella

Florio Paccagnella studies advertising graphics at the Enal High School of Arts, then at the Academy of Fine Arts at Brera, Milan. In 1974, shortly after graduation he already works for the most well-known advertising agencies and he finishes Fiorucci graphics. Matteo Thun discovers him and introduces him to Ettore Sottsass, leading to his becoming friends and founding a graphic arts company with such prominent young designers a Marco Zanini and Also Cibic.

Ettore Sottsass invites him to design the first invitation card of Memphis. 1981 brings about world recognition! He deigns cookie boxes for Suchard (Nestle Group) and works as designer in several other advertising campaigns (Pazzo Mondo, Fiat Panda, etc.)

In the seventies and the eighties, he designs the signboards of several cafés and restaurants, including the famous Surplus signboard, in the vicinity of Brera, Milan, where he lives. Ettore Sottsass considers him one of the greatest air brush designers all over Europe.  His pictures can be found in well-known private collections, too.

In 1995 the Italian state broadcasting corporation, RAI borrows his pictures for television set, "This experience was of great importance for me" he recounts, "as it gave me a chance to transfer my work to a different sphere, kind of moving beyond the barrier of fine arts."
