The mark of a sophisticated community, as settlement became entrenched, came when a more affluent class turned to the waterways for leisure and established cottage communities and yacht clubs. Ottawa’s Britannia Yacht Club began in 1887 as the Britannia Aquatic Club, then the Britannia Nautical Club, and in 1895 incorporated as the Britannia Boat House Club. Under this name the members erected an elegant boathouse in 1896, as seen here, to store then canoes and rowboats. The name was changed to Britannia Yacht Club in 1950.
