Choosing the correct bar and chain for your chainsaw can be a hassle. Today, I'll attempt to make that easier. Your saw was probably available from the dealer with several different B&C lengths, pitches and gauges. So how do you tell them apart? The easiest way is to locate a dealer/reseller that has high marks and carries the line of products that you need.(ex. Stihl, Husqvarna, Echo, etc.) This dealer/reseller will be able to select the correct replacement B&C with the model # from your saw and the part # from your current bar. If you would prefer to choose your own, then these are the specifications you will need to determine:

1. Bar/Chain cutting length (ex. 8", 14", 20", etc.)
2. Bar/Chain pitch (ex. 1/4", 3/8", .325", etc.)
3. Bar/Chain gauge (ex. .043", .050", .063", etc.)
4. Bar/Chain drive link count (ex. 44, 56, 72, 91, etc.)

How to determine these specs:

Cutting length: You will need to measure cutting length, NOT total length. Cutting length is the measurement from the outermost cutting tooth to the front of the bar cover on your saw. Then, round to the nearest inch. Total length is the measurement of the entire bar.

Pitch: Pitch is the measurement of length between any 3 consecutive rivets (on the chain), divided by 2. This is displayed as either a fraction of an inch or as a decimal in 1/1000th of an inch. (ex. 1/4" or .325")

Gauge: Gauge is the measurement of thickness of the drive link's inner tooth. (the part that fits into the bar) This is displayed as a decimal in 1/1000th of an inch. (ex. 0.050" shortened to .050")

Drive links: This is the easiest specification to determine. All you need to do is count the drive links. Each drive link has an inner tooth that fits into the bar.
