21st CENTURY HISTORICAL INFORMATION:

During the War on the Western and Eastern Fronts waged between 1939-1945 across the vast expanses of the French countryside, Russia and the German Heartland the frontline moved almost constantly. From one week to the next, the battle see-sawed between the steppes of Russia and into Stalingrad, to Rommel's well defended Atlantic Wall to the Front lines stretching across France and into Belgium... and finally into the homeland of the Reich... Germany itself. This often meant that positions moved constantly and were desperately in need of communications and battlefield updates. For the Allies, if communication lines were disrupted, this role often fell to the Motorcycle Dispatch Rider or Motorcyclist, who often operated a Harley Davidson 750 or an Indian 750 motorcycle, which enabled him to bring important messages or even mail to the troops.

The American Armed Forces used this impressive Harley Davidson 750 motorcycle, built in the late 1930’s to the requirements of the American Police forces, and in limited quantities the civilian market, during World War II. This motorcycle, thanks to its good "road-holding" qualities, performance and powerful engine, and sturdy reliable construction was used by the U.S. Army Military Police (MP) for surveillance and by U.S. Army Dispatch Riders, who served as couriers for rapid delivery of urgent orders and messages between headquarters and front line units, especially at a time when telecommunications were limited and insecure.

HISTORICAL NOTE: While the German military was the largest employer of motorcycles during World War II, however the British, French, and the United States Army, also used motorcycles in battle to deliver a wide variety of messages, especially when wire communications were compromised or to deliver the mail. The U.S. Army military motorcyclists also played an important role either as solo couriers or as scouts and during the campaigns that spread across Europe, motorcycle troopers served a variety of functions including delivering dispatches and scouting. As with motorcyclists today, during the war there was a kinship among these soldiers... they rode exposed... without the armor plating of the tanks, without the safety of hundreds of foot soldiers beside them... moving targets, as it were.

We have found both the French and Belgian people, especially in the towns in and around Normandy and also in Bastogne, to be very friendly and still grateful to the Allies, especially the American forces, for their liberation… despite the huge loss of life and property suffered by both the French and Belgian civilians.
