VERY GOOD CONDITION

This sale is for a vintage FULL SUEDE LEATHER edition entitled “In Memoriam,” by Alfred Lord Tennyson, with an analysis by the Rev. F. W. Robertson, an Introduction by Alice Meynell and a frontispiece portrait of Tennyson.

It was published by Blackie & Son Ld., of London, Glasgow and Bombay in or before Xmas 1919 (date of inscription).

Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892) succeeded William Wordsworth as Poet Laureate in 1850 and is regarded as the chief representative of poetry in the Victorian age.  His poetic career extended longer than this – a 60 year period.  No single event influenced it more than the death in 1833 of his friend Arthur Hallam, who died suddenly in Vienna, and was buried at Clevedon.  To Arthur Hallam’s betrothal with Tennyson’s sister reference is made in several stanzas.  Queen Victoria said of this long poem “Next to the Bible, In Memoriam is my comfort”.

The book measures 6.3 inches x 4.25 inches and has 232 pages, which are gilt edged to the tops and hand-cut to the side rims.

The book is in very good neat condition for a softback of its age, with minor wear/fading to the suede leather limp cover, with a previous owner’s gift inscription at the front and no other ink or pencil markings in the book.

A very good neat copy of this vintage edition.
