About CGC Grading:
CGC is an independent professional grading company that grades and encapsulates paper collectibles.
They carefully go through each and every page of a magazine, carefully checking for any form of restoration or repairs, making certain all pages are present, staples are original, and then arrive at a consensus grade by three graders examining the magazine. It is a very intense process. Then the magazine is sealed in an archival safe, flexible yet extremely strong inner well, finally being sealed into a strong and rigid outer crystal clear holder with a computer generated label at top. The magazine's information is then collected and included in a Census report. Once graded and sealed the magazine is tamper proof and will remain in the given grade for the future years to come. Which means that any buyer can be assured of the grade and integrity of the magazine, always.
Because of the rigid standards and tamper proof encapsulation, world record prices are realized ONLY when an item is professionally graded. Notice the Action Comics #1 that recently sold on ebay for an astounding 3.1 million dollars. Without professional grading that book would not have sold for even a tiny fraction of that price.
What is the "Single Highest Grade"?
ALL magazines and comic books that are graded in the CGC system are recorded on a Census. As the years pass it becomes easy to see which magazines are indeed rare in high grade. The "Single Highest Grade" means that the magazine is the highest grade ever recorded on the Census.
It is shocking for a seasoned magazine dealer to discover that what they thought was rare is not and what they think might be common is extremely rare, especially in grade. The Census will paint that picture over time. In the long run the grade can mean literally everything. And a tiny increase in grade can mean up to double the price, which is a difficult realization for most dealers who sell based on cover graphics or personal value systems. Eventually, the intense pressure to acquire the Highest grade of a particular magazine will push prices to limits never even considered.
Eventually as the Census matures, to have an example on the TOP TEN of the CGC Census will be considered a very desirable example to own.
