This is an imari ceramic sake flask, or tokkuri, dating back to the late Meiji Era (c. 1900).  It has kanji calligraphy hand painted on both sides.  One side reads, "Yamashita saka-ten" (the sake store's name; see picture 1) and the other side is an address of the sake store (see picture 2).

This style of tokkuri was meant to be reused and would have been brought back to the original sake store for re-use.  It is made of hand-thrown ceramic and is glazed inside and out with a milky taupe glaze.  It is made of a high fire ceramic, and is not only water tight but also quite durable.  It measures about 5" in diameter by 10 1/4" tall (12.5 x 26 cm). Having been in storage most of its life, with exception of the small ineffective cracks/hairlines (which was created during the process of making), it remains in very fine condition  as seen in the enlarged pictures.  A great way to enjoy serving sake to your guests and a fine art object on its own.
