Plastercraft a New Craft Devised and Explained Major H. Miller Pitman & Sons 1953

From the Foreword:

IT has been said with some truth that there is nothing new under the sun. Whether one accepts or challenges this view, it would certainly take a bold man to lay claim to complete originality in the field of hobbies and home crafts. From time immemorial man has occupied his leisure hours with the skilled use of his hands and the ideas of his fertile brain: over the years he has acquired mastery over materials and methods.

Perhaps, at best, one can hope to present old materials in new guises. By explaining the possibilities of new methods of presentation and new techniques, then something of value is acquired by the experimenter and the craftsman.

My objects in writing this little book are twofold, and are related to each other. First in importance is the fact that over the past year or two I have derived much enjoyment and satisfaction from making models and decorative plaques. When I found that my first efforts, made in an attempt to amuse the children, withstood the critical scrutiny of my young family, I was encouraged to persevere. When subsequently, with some trepidation, I tested the reaction of my wife by hanging a plaque in the sitting-room as a wall decoration I was further encouraged by her restrained but appreciative response. It appeared that the plaque was neither "Victorian" nor amateurish. Having won the approval of this most severe panel of critics I decided that the hobby was well worth pursuing.

My second reason for trying to explain "Plastercraft" is that many visitors to my home have shown interest in the models and curiosity as to how they were made. Having done my best to enlighten them I have come to the conclusion that what has interested a limited circle of friends might well have a wider appeal, and it is in this belief that I have endeavoured in the following pages to explain as simply as possible what I have learned by experiment over the past two years.
