Heathkit Laboratory IM-30, (IM-36) Transistor & Diode Tester Analyzer RESTORED, UPDATED and UPGRADED with Our EXCLUSIVE 120 volts Regulated Power Supply!

00

This RARE 1962 IM-30 LABORATORY Transistor/diode  tester/ANALYZER is reknown for its ruggedness and accuracy.
In 1968, with a few upgrades, it was replaced by the IM-36  model (beige cabinet) .
An excellent tool for production, design, service and education.

The design of this  analyzer was as close as you could get to a sophisticated tube tester, and it may still be the only affordable instrument of this caliber. Indeed besides the functions described in the ad and below, it will  measure by calculation:

AC current gain

DC transconductance

AC Transconductance

DC resistance, base, collector

AC resistance, base, collector

Direct reading of DC Beta (gain) from 0 to 300 and accurate measurements of currents and leakage of transistors permit testing under simulated operating conditions.

Ac operation conditions can be readily found by testing the transistor at two different bias points and calculating the desired AC operating condition.

Four level switches permit eight different test and measurements, which result in comparative quality figure (beta, gain) rather than the simple good-bad test made by many other transistor testers.

Heath's self-contained power supply consists of seven standard D cell batteries. External voltages sources for higher values of bias, collector, or leak voltages, can be connected to convenient binding posts for high voltage transistor testing.

However, it is unfortunate that Heathkit never developed a power supply for such a sophisticated lab instrument. When used occasionally, unscrewing  the back plate to remove seven batteries is not practical (5 screws) and the result is leaking batteries and many corroded battery compartments.

WE HAVE DEVELOPED A VERSATILE MULTIVOTAGE BI-GROUNDED REGULATED POWER SUPPLY FOR THE  IM-30, IM-36 transistor analyzers. Duplicating so many 1.5 volts D cells to be used individually, in series or reverse series with at least five floating grounds was not an easy feat (We now understand Heath's decision in the sixties not to market such a power supply).

web

FEATURES:

SEVEN  1.55 volts  OUTPUTS used individually or six of them in series.

TWO independent sets of GROUNDS.

FIVE floating GROUNDS

TOTAL CURRENT DRAW CAPACITY : up to 1.7 A.

Heath very uses high currents in this tester! Most transistors can be tested  at low voltages and average current with the power supply, however you  need to add rechargeable D cells to test them at the full rated  15A!

The available current is at its maximum 1.5A at the 1.5 volt bias supply and the 9 volts total supply.

yol

The following test were conducted using the power supply adjusted for 1.57 volts compared with one D cell.

With a 10 ohm charge, the regulator voltage of 1.57 volt only drops by 0.08% compared to an incredible 20%  for a zinc-carbon battery!
Regulation comparison with a 10 ohms load:
This power supply: 1.571 to 1.566 volt!!
Energizer D cell: 1.573 to 1.40 volt
Zinc-carbon D cell: 1.565 to 1.31 volt!!

AS A BONUS, THIS REGULATED POWER SUPPLY ALSO IMPROVES THE ACCURACY OF THE TESTER.  In fact, the improvement in the supply voltages result in a drop of up to 12% inaccuracies to less than 1% on some ranges of the analyzer; assuming that the batteries would always stay fresh!! There is no way to predict the magnitude of the error as the batteries age!

THE POWER SUPPLY  EASILY FITS INSIDE THE IM-30, IM-36 CABINET

There is no yellowing of the meter lens nor fading of the meter lettering. Inspect the cabinet and battery compartment photos, they are now flawless.

This unit has been taken apart. Solder joints were inspected with a magnifier. Then some parts are replaced as needed.

The cabinet and all knobs are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Also most cosmetic flaws are repaired all the way down to polishing some of the vintage screws. Finally the cabinet is freshly redone with matching Heathkit paint.

Updates have been performed as needed, mainly adding the diodes protecting the meter and condensers at the sockets limiting surges to the transistor being tested.

WHO ARE WE?
A TEAM OF ENGINEERS, TEACHERS AND OTHER PROFESSIONALS WHO  FOR OVER 15 YEARS, HAVE MADE A HOBBY OF PRESERVING VINTAGE ELECTRONICS OF INTEREST WHILE IMPROVING THEIR PERFORMANCE WHEN PRACTICAL. COLLECTIVELY WE HAVE SPENT THOUSANDS OF HOURS DEVELOPING OUR CIRCUITS AND BUILDING OUR PROJECTS WITH PRIDE AND EXCITEMENT.
WE BELIEVE IN USING THE EQUIPMENT WE REBUILD AND UPGRADE, BECAUSE ITS MODERN COUNTERPART OFTEN, DO NOT MATCH THE QUALITY. THE TRUE EQUIVALENT MAY COST SEVERAL TIMES MORE! SINCE 2006, WE HAVE SOLD A FEW HUNDREDS OF OUR UPGRADED PROJECTS WITH 100% SATISFACTION OF OUR BUYERS!
SINCE IT IS MAINLY A HOBBY, WE DO NOT STRIVE TO RECOUP OUR TRUE COSTS AND WE DO TRY TO PRICE OUR ITEMS FAIRLY. BUT IF YOU WATCH THE MARKET, YOU MAY REALIZE THAT WE HAVE LITTLE OR NO COMPETITION. IN FACT AS AN EXAMPLE, THE UPGRADED IG-18 THAT WE HAVE SOLD HAVE VERY LITTLE IN COMMON WITH THE TYPICALLY DILAPIDATED, UNTESTED OR DEFECTIVE GENERATORS WE FIND TOO OFTEN ON EBAY!

PREVIOUS Q & A's
Q: Would you be willing to put onto ebay the mods you did?
I have a IM25 I am trying to get stable and operational and am at my wits end with this meter!
Happy to pay for your time in compiling what you did.
Thanks For your time,

A: Thanks for your interest
1-We invest hundreds to thousands of hours in our projects and we cannot and do not expect to be paid for our time.
2-We also spent thousands of dollars in the process and we must try to recoup some of it, otherwise we would end up with a high inventory and no funds or room to pursue our hobby!
3-We have occasionally had the unfortunate situation where we were competing against our own hard work running the risk of drying up our funding! an unscrupulous copycat seller have use our ideas and instruments, even sometimes copypasted our texts, used our pictures while claiming that is selling more for less!
4-Because of this situation, we are willing to sell the information to the buyers of our products but not to the public at large.

5- Finally, ;we have made a special offer to interested buyers: «I have received many requests to upgrade instruments that you already own. Buy my instrument, pay for it Now and ship your old meter or generator. I will refund between a minimum of $30.00 and a maximum of $40.00 as soon as I can inspect and test it. You pay shipping and I take care of all Ebay and Paypal fees.»

Please, read the description and examine the photographs carefully.
I sell quality new or nearly new tested merchandise. Whether or not an article is new, I use the same care inspecting, detailling or restoring it, as I use preparing the listing you are reading now. My buyer's emails and feedbacks attest to the cleanliness of my items down to the smallest nook and cranny.
Rarely, an item may be auctioned for parts or rebuild and would be clearly described as such.
Please email me if you have any questions.
I value every single bidder. All transactions, however small, get the same attention.
SHIPPING

I expect to hear from the winning bidder within 48 hours.
Unless I use a flat rate, I do my best to charge as exact shipping as possible. I will round up to the next dollar or two to cover calculator errors, delivery confirmation, gas and sundries. Flat rate charges may be less or more than actual shipping costs.
I will not refund lost or damaged uninsured shipments.
Because shipping facilities may be as far as 40 miles (64 km), I only ship once a week usually from Vermont for U.S. bidders and from Canada for Canadians and I do combine shipping for savings whenever possible. The amount of care I take packing is also at par with the quality of my merchandise and the professionalism of my listings.

INTERNATIONAL

Buyers from outside the United States need to email me as early as possible before bidding, about methods of payment and shipping rates. (PLEASE CONFIRM CALCULATOR RATES WITH ME)
FEWER SELLERS ACCEPT TO SHIP OVERSEAS because of the amount of time it takes for the paperwork and knowledge of shipping options and laws. Also some international buyers do not email before bidding, yet will hold the seller responsible for lateness of delivery, or worse ask Paypal for a chargeback.
I will provide you with the date, custom, tracking & insurance receipt numbers. Keep them handy (do not delete) as you may need to contact your local Post Office with this information in order to find out the date of delivery. About 6 to 8 weeks from the shipping date, if LOCAL INVESTIGATION concludes that your item has been lost or damaged, contact me then, I would file a claim with the US Postal Service and an investigation would be initiated by them.
USPS WILL NOT INSURE SOME INTERNATIONAL SHIPMENT METHODS AND DESTINATIONS,
I charge export papers fees for bidders outside North America. IF NEEDED, YOU MUST FIND A FRIEND FLUENT IN ENGLISH OR FRENCH. Fast and efficient communication is essential.

Hi Leslie

There are several things that struck me about this transaction.....incredibly well packed item, precise and prompt communication, mint-condition item and a positive overall experience. Incidentally, I checked the signal generator with a Hewlett Packard digital frequency counter. It is dead-on accurate, unusual for an antique analog generator. This has been a distinct pleasure.
