Black Pepper Spice Seeds

     How would you like to grow the plant that produces the worlds oldest spice? Small white flowers form along pendulous spikes that hang among heart shaped forest green leaves. Flowers give way to long hanging clusters of berries that turn from green, to orange to stunning red when ripe. It looks its best in a hanging basket or grown on a trellis. Peppercorns can be sun dried and ground as pepper.

Sowing instructions:

  • Scarify the seed and soak in warm water for 24 hours

  • Sow seed 3/4” deep at a soil temperature of  61-64° F. and keep moist

  • Sow in standard good draining potting mix

  • Grow in full light, water regularly and feed once a month. Roots stay close to the soil surface making it a great bonsai tree!

  • Likes a deep, rich well fertilized soil

  • Keep moist and feed once a month

  • Transplant when large enough to handle into pots

  •  Keep humid if in dry conditions by occasional misting

·      full sun to partial shade is best; shade tolerant

·      moist, slightly acidic, well-drained, high organic matter soil is ideal 

·      dislikes hot, dry locations
