    Folks mock the idea of heating with candles but lets do a bit of math. One candle produces about 150 BTUs per hour. A standard electric heater on high (120v @ 1,500 watts) puts out around 5,200 BTUs of heat. So...yes, it would take 35 candles to do the same. But, in a survival scenario 150 BTUs might keep hypothermia at bay in a small well insulated space (like a car). What would 2 do?

     
    Math isn't totally against candles though. Consider these 9 candles x 80 hours of burn time each = 720 hours. 720 hours x 150 BTUs per hour equates to 108,000 BTUs. It would take 1 Electric heater running full blast for 20.7 hours to produce the same heat that these 9 simple candles contain.

    Yes, I know you can't get all that heat out in a hurry. Well, that's not entirely true. It's all about surface area. If you use one candle to melt another and pour the wax off onto newspaper, wood shavings, toilet paper and light that....stand back. liquid wax is quite flammable and when heated to a certain point it will burn without a wick. Be careful folks.

    Wax is very versatile here are a few of the uses

    • minor abrasions
    • dry, cracked, or chapped skin
  • it can be formed and reformed 
  • it can be melted and poured to keep a fire going (even in the rain - be careful)
  • Wax dipped wood shavings, cotton fabric, or paper towel makes a virtually waterproof tinder
  • A roll of TP + Wax = Hobo heater (best used in a metal can you can cover with a lid to extinguish - you can't blow it out)
  • it can be shaved onto wet tinder to help start a fire in damp conditions
