Banana Passion Fruit

 

If you are a passion flower fan this plant won’t disappoint. Single petal, pink to purple flowers bloom profusely on long vines that can be trellised or used as a ground cover.  Long banana-like fruit follow continually blooming flowers.  This plant can be planted as an annual in frost zones. Flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies.

·        The fruit is also known in South America as “curaba,” “tintin,” “tumbo,” and “trompos”

·        The vine can grow to over 20ft

·         Native to the Andes, and is found wild in Venezuela, Columbia, Peru, and Bolivia

·        Banana passion fruit prefers a cooler and less humid environment than other passion flowers

·        Fruit is sweet and can be eaten fresh picked

·        This plant should not be grown in Hawaii, South Africa and New Zealand as it is considered a weed in those places

Sowing instructions:

·         Soak seed in warm water for 24 hours

·         Sow seed 3/4” deep at a soil temperature of  61-64° F. and keep moist

·          Keep humid if in dry conditions by occasional misting
