GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a charming Chinese porcelain “celadon green” crackle lotus leaf form bowl. The origin of porcelain pottery-making technology dates back 6000 years to the Neolithic period, and the related technologies and skills were continuously developed throughout early Chinese history. By the time the industry had matured during the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279), porcelain was an indispensable item for daily use in all sectors of society and was exported by land and sea. The term "celadon" for the pottery's pale jade-green glaze was coined by European connoisseurs of the wares. Celadon glaze refers to a family of transparent glazes, many with pronounced (and sometimes accentuated) cracks in the glaze, which are produced in a wide variety of colors, and generally used on porcelain or stoneware clay bodies. Celadon green glazes have such popularity and impact that the style became known as “Celedon Green” and pieces made with it are often referred to as "celadons." However, the shades of color range from a very pale green to a deep intense green, often with the intent to imitate the green shades of jade. The color is produced by iron oxide in the glaze mixture. The leaf form bowl on offer is a particularly fine and beautiful example of this technique, with the desired characteristic crazing (a glaze “defect”) very much in evidence, which would have been referred to as “crackle” glaze. The bowl measures 4.5 inches in diameter by 1.5 inches in height (11.4 cm by 3.81 cm). It is in very good condition, and generally consistent with a dating to the late-20th century. It also comes with a stunning lotus leaf motif mahogany base. A superb example of a very distinctive style of Chinese porcelain, it would make a fine collector’s piece.
