Wand is from the school
of Brucknerian's that believe in flexibility of tempo and this can lead to many
exciting climaxes due to prior relaxations. The Berliner Philharmoniker play
their hearts out for Wand with deeply committed playing. Compared to van Zweden
(who unquestionably is given better sound), this is by far the richer and deeper
musical experience. One only has to sample the string scales preceding the brass
fanfares of the first movement of both versions to hear which orchestra is on a
visionary journey of the soul and it is one of many instances where the details
add to the conception of the whole conception. Spacious, yet mindful of the need
to maintain structural coherence as well as a certain grandeur and sweep, Wand
chooses the ideal pulse. Sometimes the there is a greater adoption of the tempo
inflections than some might feel is indicated by the score - whether one feels
this is a convincing approach is largely a matter of taste but (as someone who
is more naturally at home with a "straighter" approach, as idealised by Karajan)
there is little that will jar with the vast majority of listeners.
The
andante has a naturalness that is quite in keeping with the spirit of the
occasion, though it cannot be said that details are left unattended. The Scherzo
and Trio is well done as well, although some might feel the trio is a little
slow on its feet (as with the performance of the ninth symphony) but this is a
minor quibble in context. The finale's opening as Wand, ably abetted by the
Berliners, manages to evoke the material from previous movements whilst
introducing the new ideas - the sense of arrival at the climaxes is
unquestionable and leaves one in no doubt about the wisdom of previous
interpretative decisions."
"The series of live recordings of Bruckner symphonies with Günter Wand and the
Berlin Philharmonic released in SA-CD hybrid by RCA/BMG/Esoteric (Japan) is
unquestionably one of the finest recordings I've ever heard--and I've only
listened to the CD layer. The sound is not equally impressive for each release
(Bruckner 4, 5, 7, 8, & 9 are represented), but taken as a group, these
define the true sound of a close perspective on the world's greatest
orchestra--these recordings will probably make you believe it, too! The rapport
between the players and Maestro Wand is palpable. This is what trust sounds

Having occasionally performed with another top orchestra, I feel
quite certain that these recordings will give you an impression of what it feels
