An excellent French cloisonne mantel clock in very good working order.
Keeps excellent time and strikes the gong when appropriate.
. This clock has the original mercury filled pendulum.
Mercury is a very expensive metal and was only used in high quality clocks. Many cocks of this style have a false mercury pendulum.
Mercury was used because it is sensitive to heat. When the room heats up for example during the daytime and cools down at night this can cause the clock to give an innacurate time reading. Mercury expands and contracts with the heat wich slows the clock up or makes it go faster and this keeps the time accurate.
