This sale is for a large size quality vintage hardback FOLIO SOCIETY EDITION entitled “The Autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini,” translated into English by George Bull, with 16 pages of illustrations of his works.

 

It was published by The Folio Society, of London, in 1970.

 

Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571) wrote his autobiography between 1558 and 1566.  It was not published until more than 150 years after he died (1^st published in 1728) and it did not become widely known outside Italy until the early 19^th century.  In the last 100 years or so it has become one of the most notorious of all autobiographies.  It provides a most vivid (and convincing) account of the rulers of the 16^th century and of the manners and morals of their subjects.

 

The contents include:

 

·        Introduction

·        The Life of Benvenuto The Son of Giovanni Cellini, Written by Himself in Florence

·        The Works of Benvenuto Cellini (Illustrated)

 

The book measures 10 inches x 6.5 inches x 1.25 inches (a little bigger in its slipcase) and has 351 pages + illustrations. 

 

The book is in very good clean and neat condition, with minor wear.  The binding is very good with no loose or missing pages.  There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book.  The slipcase split/flapping/damaged to one end.
