GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a stylish and rare Chinese carved huanghuali wood lidded vessel. Wood carving in China constitutes three major categories: architecture, furniture and artworks. Wood carving as handiworks for display started during the Song Dynasty when the practice of appreciating artworks gradually rose among the literati and refined scholars. This prevailing custom reached a peak in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Furnishing artworks are a traditional category in wood carving, which are placed on cabinets, windowsills, tables, shelves, etc. The wood used in carvings was particularly important in stressing carving or turning skills, the perfection of form, composition and lines. The Chinese term huanghuali literally means "yellow flowering pear" wood. The modifier huang (yellowish-brown) was added in the early twentieth century to describe old huali wood whose surfaces had mellowed to a yellowish tone due to long exposure to light. A member of the rosewood family, huanghuali stands for rarity, beauty and high prices in today’s Chinese furniture and artwork market. It is believed that there are less than 10,000 pieces of huanghuali furniture left in the world. Because the wood is nearing extinction, and is now a protected species, supply is very limited. Matched with the rapidly increasing demand for Chinese antiques, prices for huanghuali furniture have skyrocketed over the years. Consequently, the demand for artworks made of huanghuali has also increased. The finest huanghuali has a translucent shimmering surface with abstractly figured patterns. The color can range from reddish-brown to golden-yellow. This beautiful carved wood lidded vessel is very representative of the reddish tone aesthetic, with wonderfully textured wood grain surface patterns. It measures 5 inches in diameter by 3.5 inches in height (12.7 cm by 8.89 cm). It is in very good condition. A fine collector’s piece for anyone interested in Chinese wood, wood carving, or Chinese art in general.
