Known as a kiri-kodansu (small personal tansu chest), this tansu chest was made of solid paulownia kiri wood and used over 90 years ago in the late Taisho Era (c. 1925) . The kiri-kodansu was a special chest used to store one's personal accessories as well as money, documents and other valuables.

This tansu chest is made of solid kiri (paulownia) wood and hardened hinoki wood peg construction (see last picture).  All the hardware is made of hand forged copper with an original deep rich patina.

This tansu chest has total five drawers of various sizes as well as two sliding doors that can be removed for open display (see pictures 7 & 8) . All drawers  move easily without binding.

This chest has a near century old original warm aged patina and, having been used lovingly over the centuries,  it remains in very fine original antique condition and should serve one well for another century of use.   It measures 24" wide by 18 3/4" high by 12" deep (61 x 47 x 31 cm).  A great piece of Japanese history and an interesting and very solid and functional piece of furniture.
