Frederick Edward Hulme was born in Hanley, Staffordshire, England, in March 1841 and begans studying art at South Kensington in 1858.
In 1870 he began work as art and drawing master at Marlborough College and his Familiar Garden Flowers, written by Shirley Hibberd, was first published in five 'series' by Cassell's between in the early 1880s. He also illustrated and wrote Familiar Wild Flowers, at about the same period. 
His artistic skill was recognised in his appointment as Professor of geometrical drawing at King's College in 1896 and he continued his work as an illustrator until shortly before his death at Kew, England, on 11 April 1909.
