Als Nachfolger des Porsche 550 A, der mit Hans Herrmann, Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips oder Richard Frankenberg Klassensiege bei den 24 Stunden von Le Mans und in der Sportwagen-WM eingefahren hatte, war der 718 RSK konsequent für den Rennsport optimiert: flacher, leichter, stärker und mit besseren Bremsen ausgestattet avancierte der neue 718 RSK zum Dauer-Klassensieger in der Weltmeisterschaft des Jahres 1958. Die Tatsache, dass das Formel 2 Reglement von 1958 nicht zwingend freistehende Räder forderte, bescherte dem 718 RSK eine erstaunliche Parallel-Karriere. Umgebaut zum Monoposto trat der Einsitzer nun mit mittig angeordneter Lenkung in der F2 an. Auf der Nordschleife des Nürburgrings war der silberne Spyder sogar bei einem Formel 1 Rennen im Einsatz, da der GP von Deutschland auch für Formel 2 Fahrzeuge ausgeschrieben war. Und so taucht Edgar Barths 6. Platz sogar in der Formel 1 Statistik auf.

What sounds like a joke was enabled by the CSI regulations in the late 1950s. The Porsche 718 RSK had replaced the successful Porsche 550 A regular World Sportscar Championship class winner of 1956 and 1957. The new type 718 RSK was consequently designed for racing purposes only. With a lighter and lower chassis, a stronger engine and improved braking and steering system the new car succeeded at Le Mans, Nürburgring, Silverstone, Sebring and the Targa Florio. When Ferry Porsche realized that Formula 2 regulations did not mandatorily ask for an open wheel car the 718 RSK started an astonishing second career in Formula racing. Redesigned with a central steering wheel and a single seat the now monoposto racer entered F2. The silver spyder even made its way into Formula 1 history books when Edgar Barth finished 6th overall in the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring in 1958 as the long track allowed Formula 2 cars as well to fill the grid. The 718 RSK was an unequalled multi-talent.
