Antique Chinese Applied Faces Fan Lacquered Sticks Circa 1875

Description:

A rare Chinese applied faces fan with a double paper leaf and lacquered sticks.  While applied faces fans were made throughout the 19th century, the asymmetrical design was only produced from about 1870 to around 1885.  During this period, the same asymetrical design was a feature of women's dresses.  The fan is large, the guard measuring 13 1/4" long.  It is in good condition with no damage or repairs to the sticks. The leaf is a bit oxidized and there are some small edge tears at the folds and some thin areas of the leaf in the folds. All the applied robes and faces are there, approx. 50 per side.  Guaranteed to be as described.
